BIOGRAPHY
Rodrigo Parejo (1981) is a Spanish jazz musician, improviser, researcher, composer, and educator. Based between The Netherlands, Spain and South-East Asia, he has been active in various music scenes, including Jazz, World, contemporary Dance, and Experimental Creative Improvised Music across Europe, Asia and the US. He performs a broad range of styles: from minimalistic meditative solo performances to explosive free-jazz orchestras, contemporary ensembles, ethnic folk music groups, flamenco dance companies, contemporary dance performances, classical, rock, Latin, and meditation music.
As a freelance musician, Rodrigo has collaborated with numerous projects and renowned international artists, including Phil Woods, Norma Winstone, London Improvisers Orchestra, Royal Improvisers Orchestra, The Hague Ethospheric Orchestra, Han Bennink, Michael Moore, Tristan Honsinger, Phil Minton, Steve Beresford, Jim McNeely, Alex Sipiagin, Lazara López Cachao, Saray Muñoz, Lucky Losada, Antonio Sánchez, Saúl Quirós, Israel Cerreduela, Alberto Marín Company, Flaco de Nerja, Rianto, Mao Arata, Peni Candrarini, Asguests Quintet, Modelo 62, Sambayá, John Thomas, Sri Hanuraga, Riza Arshad, Lewis Pragasam, Steve Thornton, DJ Maestro, Nicole Mitchell and Bunghar Khan Company. Rodrigo graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts and completed a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (The Netherlands, as well as a Master’s Degree in Flamenco Music Research at the University of Cadiz (Spain). He has received artistic education from referent institutions around the world, including the Banff Centre for Creative Arts (Canada), School for Improvisation (New York), Norwegian Music Academy (Oslo), and Institute Seni Indonesia (Surakarta), Cambodia. He studied with acclaimed international artists such as John Ruocco, Bobby Martínez, Ralph Alessi, Dave Douglas, Tony Malaby, Ben Street, Matt Penman, Jen Shyu, Hein van de Geyn, Don Byron, and Joshua Redman.
In addition to his performing career, Rodrigo has offered workshops and masterclasses in music improvisation, music meditation, and sound healing sessions in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Cabodia and indonesia. Notable institutions where he has taught include Lasalle College of the Arts (Sigapore), SOTA Singapore School of the Arts, Institute of Arts Indonesia (Yogyakarta), and Universities Pelita Harapan (Jakarta, Indonesia).
Over the years, Rodrigo has received numerous grants and scholarships from institutions such as the Banff Centre for Creative Arts (Canada), Print Bernhard Fonds (The Netherlands), Ministry of Education and Culture (Indonesia), AIE (Spain), and SGAE (Spain), among others.
